The Canadian Revenue Agency is being misrepresented in a new phishing scam, it has been claimed.
According to CTV News, a scam email purporting to be from the national government is being circulated, targeting Canadian taxpayers.
The email has the subject line ‘Revenue Canada Software’ and urges the recipient to install malicious software to their computer.
This claims to streamline income tax reporting for people living in the country.
“Click on the attached video to see how to install this simple program,” the phishing email states.
“It provides an overview of the custom Revenue Canada USB drive and tax software.”
A spokesperson for the Canadian Revenue Agency confirmed that the email was not sent out or authorized by the agency.
The body confirmed that it never communicates with taxpayers to ask for personal information by email – only by mail or phone.
