The Dashboard domain name report, which is published twice a year, has shown that there has been a dramatic upswing in the number of Web users and organizations adopting the .org top level domain name.
According to the new report, which was published this week, the number of .org registrants has risen by 10.3 percent in the past year.
This growth represents a 1.4 percentage point increases on .org registration levels recorded in 2009.
Since 2005, the number of .org domain names being used has risen from 3.9 million to 8.8 million.
The report, produced by the Public Interest Registry (PIR), said, “We expect similar results in 2011, especially considering that .org registrants are quickly approaching the nine million milestone.
“With this growth in mind, it’s all the more critical that security and stability of its infrastructure continue to be at the forefront of PIR’s core mission.”
The organization is hoping to be the first to introduce Domain Name System Security Extensions.
