Two games developers have settled a trademark dispute over the use of the term ‘scrolls’, it has been reported.
Bethesda Softworks has been at loggerheads with Mojang chief executive and Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson for some months over the use of the term.
Last year, Bethesda summoned Mojang to court after choosing the Scrolls name for its next game – a video and card-collecting hybrid.
The firm expressed concern that its rival may be close to infringing its Elder Scrolls trademark, and contacted the lawyers for brand management purposes.
But a compromise agreement has been reached, which sees Mojang avoid paying damages for their use of the ‘Scrolls’ term.
“The settlement is that we give them the trademark, get to keep the name, and won’t make an Elder Scrolls competitor using the name,” Mr. Persson stated.
