The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will allow domain name registrants to use seven regional Indian languages, it has been reported.
Individuals will be able to create domain names in Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali and Telegu, vastly increasing the variety of Web address registration options.
However, the Economic Times reported it will be some time before speakers of those languages are able to take advantage of this facility.
The news provider said that complications relating to the new scripts will cause a six-month delay to the launch of the regional domains.
ICANN explained that, even within the same language, there can be multiple spellings for the same word. The organization said it was deciding whether all different variations can be accepted in new domain names.
Until 2010, all domain names had to be written using Latin characters, but ICANN has relaxed this rule in order to improve global ease of access to the Web.
