A list of the oldest 100 registered domain names has been published, shedding further light on the early days of the World Wide Web.
According to iwhois.com, the domain name symbolics.com — which was registered on March 15, 1985 — is the oldest Web address in existence.
Next in line is bbn.com, for which an application was made one month later.
Among the other domain name registrations during 1985 were think.com, xerox.com and sun.com.
The following year, 1986, was slow for the emerging domain name market, with just 54 applications made over the 12-month period.
It took until November 30, 1987, for the 100th domain name to be registered, still some years before the start of the Internet revolution.
Zachary Rose, founder of Green Education Services, recently reminded organizations of the importance of renewing their domain names.
Writing for entrepreneur.com, he noted that a failure to safeguard online intellectual property can lead to loss of both reputation and customers.
