A Broomfield, Colo., Internet user has registered two domain names — universityofcentralcolorado.com and denverstateuniversity.com — after a news report was published outlining plans by the Metropolitan State College of Denver to change its name to either the University of Central Colorado or Denver State University.
A representative of domain name manager GoDaddy.com told the Daily Camera, “I don’t know if it’s domain squatting or not.”
“Since they’re going to be using the .edu, I think it’s more domain speculating. There definitely are marketing opportunities.”
A spokesperson for Metro State, Cathy Lucas, said the institute was not bothered by people using the .com equivalents of its new name.
“It looks like someone saw an opportunity, so good for them,” she told the news provider.
Meanwhile, John Gunter, who registered the new Web addresses for $7.49, said if the college asks for them, he will hand them over.
Recently, a Pennsylvania plumbing firm was embroiled in a anti-cybersquatting case after it registered more than 200 domain names — including some that use the mark of rival firms.
